Overview
WaterWise gives homeowners the ability to automate watering based on weather, control zones manually, or stick to a reliable schedule — all from one simple app. Whether you’re a hands-on gardener or someone who just wants things to “just work,” WaterWise adapts to your style while helping you save water along the way.

Emotional Journey

Goal

Our goal was simple: to make watering smarter without making it harder. We wanted to help people reduce water waste, avoid overwatering, and care for their gardens through an app that’s easy and intuitive to use.
By implementing a smart watering system, homeowners can enjoy healthier gardens, lower water bills, and a more sustainable, hassle-free outdoor routine.

Problem Space

Watering a garden may seem simple, but for many homeowners, it’s surprisingly inefficient and frustrating. Manual watering is time-consuming and often leads to under- or overwatering. Traditional irrigation systems can be expensive to install and maintain, and they don’t always adapt to real-time weather.
As a result, gardens suffer, water bills rise, and users are stuck adjusting schedules manually — often while physically present at home. Without smarter, more connected tools, sustainable and convenient watering remains out of reach for most people.

User Research

To better understand how people manage outdoor watering, we conducted interviews, surveys, and early usability testing with homeowners, gardeners, and smart device users.
Users consistently told us they wanted a solution that would make watering easier — not just smarter. Many were motivated by sustainability and saving money, but just as many emphasized the need for something easy to install, simple to use, and low maintenance. They wanted a system that was smart and connected, but also affordable, reliable, and aligned with eco-friendly values. These insights shaped the foundation of WaterWise’s design.

Assumptions

At the start, we assumed most users would prefer automated watering and quickly adopt smart features. We also believed that once set up, users wouldn’t need manual controls often, and that highlighting environmental impact would drive engagement.
However, research revealed a few key shifts: users were more cautious about automation than expected and needed clear, simple feedback to build trust. Manual control wasn’t just a fallback — it was a comfort. And while sustainability mattered, ease of installation, usability, and affordability were equally important in driving adoption.
These insights helped us rethink how we introduce automation and where to prioritize simplicity and control.

Design Approach

With trust and simplicity as our guiding principles, we designed WaterWise to meet users where they are — whether they prefer full automation or hands-on control.
We introduced three flexible modes: Smart Mode for weather-based automation, Schedule Mode for consistent routines, and Manual Mode for on-demand watering. This gave users control without complexity.

The onboarding experience was kept intentionally light — guiding users through setting up zones, connecting devices, and choosing a watering mode in just a few steps. A simple dashboard provides at-a-glance status updates, estimated water usage, and easy access to pause or override any schedule.
By focusing on clarity, flexibility, and real-world behavior, we designed an experience that makes smart watering feel simple, approachable, and sustainable from day one.
